A new school year. Let the artwork begin!
Welcome back everyone to a new school year. I hope everyone is feeling creative and eager to work. There is a lot going on in the art department and some amazing work is being produced already. First years are learning about colour and creating pieces based on the musical “Joseph and his technicoloured dreamcoat and German artist Gustav Klimt. Second years are creating comic book pages based on “Youth Culture” in preparation for the J.C.S.P Make a Book exhibition and have already made plans for the mural. Will it be as good as the work done by last years second years? Third years have their heads down preparing for their project which will begin in early October. The 5th and 6th years are being encouraged this year to think more creatively and develop ideas for original pieces. And finally the LCA students this year are experiencing Block Printing, Design Communication through Illustration and their Individuality and Identity. Have a great first term everyone and enjoy the first instalment of Coláiste an Átha’s new art newsletter “Artifacts”.
The competition for work to be displayed in the front hall outside the offices is now open. Entries to Ms. O’Callaghan asap.
Off to college.
- This year we said goodbye to Aaron Blackmore who has started a PLC in Gorey School of Art and Ashling Smith who has gone to Killester College to do a PLC in art. Best of luck to them both as they start their courses.
Did You Know?
- Fionnuala Smith and Aoife Meleady were winners in the County Council Biodiversity Competition this summer. Fionnuala won €70 and Aoife won €20. Well done girls.
Our Talented Students.
- Congratulations to Joshua Hogan (6th Year) who is now selling his original artwork on the internet. Check out www.dewanda.com.
- If you plan on going to art college it is best to start your portfolio in 5ft year. Check college courses for portfolio guidelines. Interviews and portfolio assessments starts in Feb of Leaving Cert 2 . Be prepared. There is a lot of work in a portfolio and 6th year is too late to start. The art room is open every Wednesday at lunchtime to facilitate those who need to do work in this area. Also, students who need to catch up on work missed, projects, assignments etc are welcome.
