Music Trip 2014 by Shane Murphy
On Monday the 27th of October 2014, twelve of our music students and two teachers(Ms. Kirwan, Ms. Casey) set off to from Dublin Airport, bound for Gatwick Airport and London. Our Ryanair flight FR112 departed at 07:35 and at 09:10 we arrived at London Gatwick Terminal 1.
After a short train journey and some short trips via the underground we proceeded to drop our baggage at our hostel (Generator Hostel London) and by 13:00 our Rock n’ Roll walking tour of London was underway. This 90 minute walking tour took us on a stroll through the winding streets of Soho and Covent Garden, the very heart of the capital’s rocking heritage. The site of The Beatles’ infamous roof top gig, the place where The Rolling Stones recorded their first album and David Bowie’s studio were just some of the sites visited on this tour.
After some well used shopping time and a meal at The Pizza Express the group attended a showing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This very engaging and memorable west end performance directed by Sam Mendes drew awe and applause from the attendants and was an alternately unique experience.
Day 2 got off to a frightening start with a trip to the London Dungeons at 10:00. This tour of the ill-famed dungeons was not only daunting but educational and I would highly recommend a visit if you ever are in London.
After lunch we queued for our turn on the London Eye to view the the vast city from a great and startling height, followed by a Thames River Cruise. This cruise provided us with an all new perspective of the city, highly enjoyable, informational and commendable.
Later that day at 21:30 the group departed London Gatwick on Ryanair flight 119 with scheduled arrival at Dublin Airport at 22:55.
This trip was an incredible, rare, and astonishing trek which none of us will be forgetting any time soon and we are all very thankful of the opportunity we were given to venture on this journey.
