Colour Day 2019 

On Friday 15th November Coláiste an Átha held their annual Colour Day 2019.This was part of Stand–Up Awareness Week which took place from November 11th -15th. Stand Up Awareness Week is a time for second-level students in Ireland to come together and take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. It is unacceptable that one in five young LGBTI+ people face bullying, and that 70% of young LGBTI+ students feel unsafe at school. 

At the start of the week myself, Cerys and Fiona made posters and spoke on the intercom to inform students that colour day was at the end of the week and to wear the colourful clothes. 

On Thursday 14th we were lucky enough to get a lot of help from TY students to make badges to hand around to every student on the day. With all the help we got enough badges for everyone in the school. 

We made the badges out of wool and started to make plaits out of it with all the different colours of the rainbow. We got a total of 330 badges made on Thursday with the help of others. 

We thought we weren’t going to get the badges done in time but when we got all the help it made us get them all done a lot quicker and we finally had enough to hand out. 

All students came into school with their most colourful clothes to support the LGBTI+ community. We made it very clear no black or navy clothing as it was all about bright colours. 

We set up a table that morning to hand out the badges to each student. There were 5 TY students helping to hand the badges out to all the students in the school, the students were Myself, Cerys, Fiona, Tara and Aine. When the bell went at the 9, we went around to each year to hand out badges to anyone who didn’t get any that morning. 

Everyone had the choice to wear the badges or put them on their pencil case. We made sure everyone had one. 

Overall, the day went very well and was a success. Everyone showed up in there most colourful clothes to support the LGBTI+ community.
